Shopping for the Baby
Other less necessary items are as follows: • baby carrier or sling • bottle-fed babies will need bottles and sterilising equipment • changing mat or table - any clean, covered flat surface, including the floor, or your lap, can be used for your baby's nappy changes • baby bath - useful but not essential. (though your baby can use the big bath, or even a clean washing-up bowl in the first week or two) • crib or less portable cot • cuddly toys (an attractive stuff in the baby's room, but of no interest to your baby for the first months) • breast pump - for expressing breast milk (if you want to leave milk for your baby when you are somewhere else) How to save money • Buy second hand where possible - so much baby clothing and equipment is outgrown before it's worn out. Look in the small ads in your newspaper, postcards in shop windows, charity shops. Check equipment for stability and safety. • Use hand-me-downs - good baby clothing can be used for several babies. • Don't buy newborn-sized baby clothes. The next size up may look big, but your baby doesn't care. (Small or pre-term babies will need some newborn clothing, though.) • Cut down old bed sheets and hem them for cot and pram bedding. • Always choose machine-washable clothes and bedding. • Borrow equipment when you anticipate using it no more than a few weeks or months, or share the cost with a friend or relative whose baby is due some months before or after yours.
