Back to School After Summer
Back to school is an exciting time, especially during the elementary school years. Your child will learn so much this year! For families, fall is a time of new beginnings and a fresh opportunity for children to advance in learning and development.
Children's Health and Nutrition
At Home
Your children diet can affect so many things in their lives that watching your child's eating habits should be one of the biggest parent's concerns. New information on nutrition, sleep, and physical activity for children motivates us to start a few new habits to improve our kids' health. We need to eliminate most sweets from our children's diets, particularly sugar-filled sodas and juices. Processed foods that are high in bad fats are also poor choices. Introducing new foods can be a challenge though it is worth trying. Our pediatrician noted that a child usually has to try a new food ten times before he begins to like it.
It is highly recommended that school-age children sleep 10-11 hours each night. Start the early bedtime habit when your child is young and keep it going as long as possible. Think about the benefits of an 8:00 p.m. bedtime for your child, and for you! Also think about keeping your child's in shape. Many kids today do not get enough physical activity. Set a goal to increase your child's opportunities for vigorous physical activity every day.
At School
Do you know what is the everyday meal quality provided by your school's canteen? Parents have a real concern for school lunch nutrition, and the issue of childhood obesity is receiving new attention in schools. School food service professionals are revising its food intake recommendations to reflect new research in nutrition. These changes will affect what your children eat at school in a positive way, and you will see a strong emphasis for kids to Eat Smart and Play Hard as a saying goes.
Parent-School Involvement
At Home
You can be involved in your child's education in many ways, and the research suggests that involvement that focuses on extending your child's school learning at home has great results. It is so much suggestible that parents must know what their child will be learning each year at school. You should also ask your child's teacher what specifically she will cover in each subject this year. Organizing a homework center for your child, planning at-home learning activities, and seeking help for learning difficulties are proactive strategies for enriching you child's mastery of elementary academics.
At School
Are you concerned about the quality of your child's school and want to be involved in its improvement? Try to start and maintain an effective parent-teacher association in your school. Parent-school groups can make a good school a great one. Do your best to make the teaching process understandable and proper to your child. Does your school have a web site? School web sites vary in the quality of their design and information, but usually provide at the least contact and schedule information. In that way you can control your child's school success and help him/her to improve things if necessary.
